Jeff Bezos' big revelation in May 2003 was BIGresearch’s recommendation to e-tailers in March 2001.

COLUMBUS, OH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 05/29/2003 -- Jeff Bezos' big revelation in May 2003 was BIGresearch’s recommendation to e-tailers in March 2001. Amazon.com Chairman and Chief Executive Jeff Bezos commented to shareholders this week that if he had known the impact of free shipping, he would have done it sooner (According to DOW JONES NEWSWIRES, 5/28/03). Free shipping could have been part of Amazon’s business strategy in early 2001 had they followed BIGresearch’s recommendations to the industry.

On March 28, 2001, BIGresearch publicly released the findings from a study of over 11,000 active Internet users. When asked what would motivate them to buy more online, the #1 response was dealing with shipping and delivery costs. To read the original 3/28/01 release, click below:

The original release quoted Dr. Joe Pilotta, VP of BIGresearch, as saying, "It appears that the real obstacle facing e-tailers is the cost of shipping which, depending on the product, could add a substantial amount to the cost of the merchandise ... What the non-online shoppers are saying is that pricing is certainly a factor but if you want me to shop online you need to address the shipping costs which are not a part of the normal retail shopping experience."

If Amazon had followed BIGresearch’s recommendations to e-tailers, they could have enjoyed the impact of free shipping at least one year earlier.
