This IDC update brings a focus on recent key events and progress on the adoption of Ethernet and the iSCSI protocol for storage interconnections. Retarding iSCSI penetration has been the tendency of the large system suppliers to be laggards in iSCSI investments and products. Even there, we note emerging iSCSI support, not from the storage businesses but from within the server businesses. Recent actions of several suppliers will have a positive impact:
Announcements from Microsoft in support of the Windows OS environment are arguably the most significant recent iSCSI progress.
Announcements by 10Gb iSCSI and NIC suppliers at unexpectedly low price points are the second accelerator.
