Commercial Geostationary Satellite Transponder Markets for Europe the Middle East and AfricaProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Frost & Sullivan Published: January 2005 Product Code: R1-3118 Description Video and Networking Applications Drive Market Growth With the deregulation of the satellite transponder market and a shift towards open sky policy, there has been a healthy rise in demand for geostationary satellite transponder services. The greatest contributors to this growth have been applications such as video and corporate networking services. Video applications currently utilize an estimated 57 percent of all leased transponder capacity in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Considering the expected launch of high definition television (HDTV) services in Europe by mid 2006, video services could account for a much higher percentage of this capacity in the future. Similarly, networking applications such as broadband terminals, narrow and broadband very small aperture terminals (VSATS) are key propellants of growth in the EMEA commercial geostationary satellite transponder market. This Frost & Sullivan research service analyses the EMEA markets for commercial geostationary satellite transponders examining supply, demand, pricing, drivers and restraints that are likely to affect the transponder leasing market. It also presents and compares satellite operators’ fleet capacities and utilization rates. Ku-Band Transponders Expected To See Increased Demand With an estimated 2877 transponders available in the C and Ku-bands, the EMEA region is the largest market in the world for satellite transponder capacities. While the demand for C-band transponders in telephony and networking applications is likely to fall, demand for Ku-band transponders is on the rise. Ku-band satellite operators could benefit from focusing on video and corporate networking applications since Ku-band transponders leased for these applications comprised seventy and nine percent respectively of total Ku-band transponders leased in the region in 2004. However, high levels of competition in the geostationary satellite transponder market may drive down transponder prices. Competition often results when there is a significant amount of unleased capacity available over any given area. In addition, satellite operators offer price discounts to key customers anticipating that these "anchor tenants" will draw other clients to the satellite neighbourhood. "The two threats that are likely to hinder growth are a continued decrease in transponder lease prices, and competing terrestrial technologies," says the analyst of this research. "Ku-band transponder lease rates will be at a premium when compared with C-band prices." Transponder Demand May Grow Among All Applications except Telephony The bulk of the EMEA commercial geostationary satellite transponder market is made up of C and Ku-band transponders, with the Ka-band slowly becoming more popular. C-band transponders leased for networking solutions are being replaced by competing terrestrial technologies or by Ku-band transponders. The migration of video from analog to digital has benefited the industry by lowering the cost of broadcasting, thereby expanding the market. "Video broadcast has long been the mainstay of the satellite services industry and is likely to continue generating the majority of revenues in the future," says the analyst. "Transponder demand is expected to grow for all applications except telephony due to telephony voice applications migrating to terrestrial fibre networks." Table of Contents 1.
