North American Enterprise Voice over WLAN Device MarketsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Frost & Sullivan Published: December 2006 Product Code: R1-5475 Description Research OverviewThe Frost & Sullivan research service titled North American Enterprise Voice over WLAN Device Markets provides an overview of the single-mode and dual-mode device markets. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the above-mentioned markets from various perspectives, namely competition, target end users, and so on. Market Sectors Expert Frost & Sullivan analysts thoroughly examine the following market sectors in this research: By application:
The following technology is covered in this research:
Increasing Deployment of IP Telephony Systems and Wireless LANs in Enterprises Driving VoWLAN Adoption The delivery of Internet Protocol (IP) telephony and other communications applications over wireless local area networks (WLAN) and cellular networks is quickly becoming the next frontier of telecom technology innovation. While the last decade was marked by the migration to converged communications over IP networks, the next decade is expected to witness the rapid penetration of mobility into business communications. The need for access to data while roaming on the premises in certain verticals such as healthcare, retail, and manufacturing, has resulted in the implementation of WLAN infrastructure that is now increasingly being used for wireless voice communications as well. However, hand-off issues between access points and the slow ratification of standards are crucial restraints to the adoption of voice over WLAN (VoWLAN). "Pairing up issues such as signal strength and billing between the cellular network and the WLAN will result in complexities slowing down the deployment of dual-mode solutions," notes the analyst of this research service. "Moreover, cellular service providers are reluctant to provide service to dual-mode devices as this might lead to a loss in call revenue." Introduction of Dual-mode Handsets expected to further VoWLAN Penetration The demand for VoWLAN devices is expected to be driven by the continuous penetration of WLAN in the North American business space. Furthermore, the entry of powerful communication solution providers such as Motorola and RIM in this market and the introduction of dual-mode handsets are likely to boost VoWLAN market growth. Dual-mode handsets promise to increase the awareness of VoWLAN as a communication solution. Dual-mode devices leveraging UMA and IMS technologies will first penetrate the consumer and prosumer space and will then gradually gain traction among mobile professionals providing them mobile access to enterprise communications both inside and outside the office. Additionally, single-mode devices have been gaining traction among verticals with a highly mobile workforce, such as healthcare and retail, and are expected to further penetrate others such as education and hospitality. Both single-mode and dual-mode devices will experience rapid growth over the next few years as they will target different verticals and functions within each industry. Overall, Frost & Sullivan expects the North American enterprise voice over WLAN device market to experience substantial growth throughout the forecast period (2007 to 2013). While an estimated 200,000 devices were shipped in 2006, this figure will reach approximately 3.4 million in 2013. While current dual-mode unit shipments account for a small share of the VoWLAN devices in the marketplace, they will account for about 80 percent of total unit shipments in 2013. "For any device vendor or service provider seeking to tap into dual-mode technology and FMC solutions, it will be critical to secure partnerships with other market participants involved in this space," says the analyst. "Joint efforts to grant technology interoperability and to develop customer awareness will help market participants benefit from an advantageous position." Table of Contents
