North American Criminal AFIS MarketsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Frost & Sullivan Published: May 2007 Product Code: R1-5848 Description This Frost & Sullivan research service titled North American Criminal AFIS Markets provides in-depth analysis of key market drivers and restraints, revenue forecasts, technology trends, and competitive structure. In this study, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: global AFIS, law enforcement AFIS, and live-scan markets.Increasing Entrants into Market Drives Criminal AFIS Market The criminal automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) market in North America was thought to be approaching saturation. However, in the last two years, there has been a flurry of activity as a result of faster upgrades and a growing interest in local law enforcement agencies in procuring their own AFIS. The growth of local agencies is opening up the market to new entrants. "The anticipated upgrade of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) IAFIS to a next-generation ABIS (multi-biometric AFIS) is expected to boost revenues by encouraging state agencies to adopt similar specifications," according to the analyst of this research service. "Mobile ID solutions are also expected to be finally adopted by various agencies and could trigger growth in the long term." Most local agencies prefer having records of only local residents as opposed to replicating the state AFIS. According to them, the majority of crimes committed are localized in nature, and searching against a smaller pool of records increases the possibility of narrowing down the suspect. At the state level, states have requirements that delete certain detainees. Local agencies want to retain them, or be able to maintain a local database to quickly identify these criminals. Besides, the desire for real-time connectivity and faster response time for fingerprint searches is prompting counties with large populations to install their own AFIS and live scan booking stations. This is expected to present AFIS vendors with tremendous growth opportunities both in the near and long term. Upgrading of State Law Enforcement AFIS and Demand for Palm Printing Drive AFIS Market The criminal AFIS market at the state level is perceived to have reached saturation as AFIS vendors claim to have sold to all the states in the United States. However, the law enforcement agencies are upgrading at a faster rate. During the turn of the century, there was a lot of upgrade activity to make systems Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant and to computerize systems that had not been already done. Many of these systems are ready for their next upgrade to meet the latest FBI or NIST standards. They are moving to add palm-print search functionality, or enhance the size of their database. AFIS systems with the ability to search palm-prints are seeing high demand from law enforcement agencies. It is estimated that one-third of all latent prints at crime scenes are palm-prints, and palm-print matching has now become an important feature to enable the agencies to solve crimes. Almost all AFIS vendors offer this feature. A large number of local agencies are getting AFIS systems just for latent palm print matching functionality. "The technology has begun to prove itself and almost all state and county AFIS RFPs are mandating palm-search technology," explains the analyst. "Since a lot of agencies do not currently have this feature, there is enormous potential for AFIS vendors to capitalize on this demand." Table of Contents
