Migration to IP and Product Bundling Driving Growth in Data Communications Market Colombia’s GDP grew more than 12 percent in 2006. The total telecommunications market growth rate also exceeded 12 percent, while some sectors such as mobile telephony, expanded at rates well above 20 percent. In line with these trends, the Colombian data communications services market has displayed moderate growth in 2006, driven by the country’s economic growth, the expansion of the rest of the telecommunications sector and the progressive addition of smaller clients to the market. However, due to the level of maturity and competitiveness of the data communications market, operators will have a hard time maintaining current growth rates. "Since the large corporations segment is almost saturated, operators are looking at small- and medium-sized businesses in order to sustain further revenue growth," notes the analyst of this research. "Product bundles and IP technologies offer more flexibility and affordable prices and are the weapons operators are using to fight in such a competitive market." Competitive Landscape Undergoes Upheaval, Creating New Windows of Opportunity In 2006, the number of competitors was estimated to be in excess of seven. The market currently comprises international and local providers with different focus and targets. The emergence of Telmex as the new market leader has redefined the competitive landscape. Telmex surpassed Impsat in terms of revenue market share, putting an end to the latter’s long reign as market leader. Telefónica, ETB, UNE (EPM) and Internexa-Flycom are also part of the followers pack. International companies such as Telmex, Telefónica, and Impsat are more focused on keeping their major participation in the large enterprise segment while simultaneously targeting medium- and small-sized companies. The presence of local providers can be observed throughout the country, particularly creating specialized services for industry verticals. Industry participants are expected to continue focusing on their core competencies to create awareness about their solutions in potential/target end-user segments. Operators will continue to enhance their product features and provide robust offerings in the market including bundled services and special solutions to cater to the medium and small segments.
