Market Overview

Latin American Network Security Markets Showing Consistent Growth

While the European and North American network security markets are already on a decreasing growth rate period, the Latin American markets are evolving considerably to show constant growth year after year. Since 2004, the market has been boosted by the economic recovery of the Southern Cone, leveraged by the Argentinean recovery and the rapid expansion of IT markets in the Andean region, highlighted by the Colombian market. Another very important market catalyst has been the heightening demand for workforce mobility, which is necessitating enhanced security solutions to protect laptops, smart-phones, and PDAs. One of the main drivers in the short term is the incremental growth of vulnerabilities and its increasingly complex attacks, and the cheaper and more efficient bundled solutions offered by vendors. As the complexity of IT infrastructure increases, more robust and complete solutions will be required to ensure safety. "Two current trends that are expected to strengthen in the short term are the shift from IDS to IPS solutions and that from IPSec VPN to SSL VPN solutions," notes the analyst of this research service. "Both IPS and SSL VPN solutions are more modern technologies, and therefore include more advanced capabilities."

Growing Shift from IPSec to SSL VPN

Firewall/IPSec VPN is the most popular and established technology in the Latin American network security markets. In 2007, the Firewall/IPSec segment accounted for 61.9 percent of the total revenues, but this share is expected to decrease in the medium-long term due to the shift from IPSec VPN to SSLVPN. Both IPSec VPN and SSL VPN provide the same secure remote access to companies, but the difference between them is that they do so in a fundamentally different manner. Connecting through HTTPS traffic, the SSL VPN allows an easier configuration than the IPSec solution, authorizing a limit and formatted access to users, simplifying remote access deployment while providing maximum flexibility for any type of remote access scenario. The SSL VPN device market in Latin America is expected to grow strongly at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.0 percent from 2007 to 2013.

Among the individual markets, Brazil is the largest network security market in Latin America, accounting for 35.5 percent of the total Latin American revenues. As Brazil has one of the largest hacker communities in the world, and hence, a very high level of network threats, companies are increasingly concerned about protection, making the country a large target market for vendors. "When analyzing the vertical markets, the banking and finance sector leads the investment on security, followed by the telecom and IT, and the government," says the analyst. "In 2007, the combined participation of these verticals was 64.1 percent of the network security market in Latin America."
