IDC research indicates that the Russian GSM mobile handset market reached 4.95 million units in the first quarter of 2004.

IDC research measures retail sales during the quarter, in volume of units sold.

The most popular model in the Russian market in Q1 was the Motorola C20x line, followed by the Motorola C350. In St Petersburg the Nokia 3310 remained the top selling handset.

The main trends observed in the market in Q1 2004 were:

Vendors

Motorola took market leadership, and showed particular strength in regional markets. Samsung also registered major gains.

Price Categories

The proportion of handsets sold in the entry level <$80 category fell in all markets.

The proportion of handsets retailing at $300 and above also diminished in all markets.

There was an upward trend in the middle of the market. This was most pronounced:

in Moscow in the $100-$120 and $150-$200 price bands. The $150-$200 price band is now the largest in Moscow in unit terms in St. Petersburg in the $120-$150 price band. The $100-$120 price band, however, remains the most significant in regional markets in the $100-$120 and $150-$200 price bands. The $100-$120 category has now edged out the <$80 as the largest in unit terms

Forecast

IDC forecasts that the total GSM market in Russia will reach 23.66 million units in 2004. This represents a 40.1% increase over 2003.
