This IDC study examines the U.S., international, and worldwide markets for traditional Unix workstations and branded Windows personal workstations for calendar year 2003. Unit shipments, factory revenue, and installed base are presented for the leading vendors and for the overall market. In addition, this study highlights trends in price bands and shifts between the types of microprocessor shipments. "Following a challenging 2001 and 2002, the workstation market in 2003 showed signs of renewed life with revenue of $4.5 billion and workstation shipments of 1,552,099. While this was a revenue decline over 2002 results, most of this decline can be attributed to the collapse of the traditional workstation space, which declined 38.2% in revenue," said Lloyd Cohen, research director of IDC's Technical Computing Systems group. "Users are migrating away from traditional workstations and moving to personal workstations. The large growth area is anticipated to be in the mobile workstation space." Table of Contents
