Western European PC Market Analysis, 3Q05Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: IDC Published: December 2005 Product Code: R104-25409 Description
The Western European PC market displayed solid trends, expanding by 16.1% year-on-year in 3Q05. Strong back-to-school season and buoyant marketing activity along with attractive price points and continued momentum in the notebook space drove PC sales across the region. Consumers responded positively to vendors' attractive digital bundles coupled with declining ASPs, while corporate demand fuelled by increasing portable adoption in the SMB space contributed to sustained levels of commercial shipments. Desktop sales recorded a healthy 8.1% growth in 3Q05. Consumer purchases were driven by increasing demand for new digital home entertainment applications, stimulating system upgrades and resulting in a solid 13.3% increase in consumer desktop sales. Commercial shipment levels softened, directly impacted by slowing corporate refresh activity and strong desktop replacement trends still observed in the SMB space, leading to a softer 5% growth in commercial desktop sales. Notebooks continued to drive overall market growth, recording a robust 29.3% in 3Q05. Consumer demand was unabated, assisted by aggressive promotions in the retail channel, while portable adoption in the SMB space also continued at an accelerated pace. Notebooks remained a major focus for all vendors across both consumer and business channels, and the attractive promotions clearly contributed to higher demand. In 4Q05, overall PC shipments are expected to grow by 15.9%, resulting in a 16.5% increase for the full year. In 2006, growth is anticipated to return to a more moderate single-digit level at 7.8% across all form factor and customer segments. "Desktop sales are expected to deliver strong results during the Christmas season, but limited corporate refresh activity and higher levels of saturation will lessen the potential for growth in 2006," said Eszter Morvay, research analyst for IDC's EMEA Quarterly PC Research group. "Although buoyant notebook demand will continue to drive growth in the coming quarters, 2006 is unlikely to record the same level of growth as 2005, with vendors looking to maintain profitability in the face of declining margins."Table of Contents
