This study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J6010102) analyzes the 2H05 (July-December) Japan server market's performance and forecasts the market over the period from 2006 to 2010. The 2H05 Japan server market grew 2.7% from the previous year to 349.711 billion yen. This had been the first positive growth rate since 2001. Meanwhile, shipments grew 12.7% from the previous year to 293,437 units, marking the fifth consecutive term of double-digit growth.

"The Japan server market took a turn for the better in 2H05. The x86 server market remained buoyant. The downtrend in average selling price lost momentum and this helped push up revenue. The reduced instruction set computer (RISC) and IA-64 servers market also showed positive growth, thanks to the existence of large orders. In view of these trends, the market forecasts for 2006 and beyond have been revised upward. The 2005-2010 Japan server market compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is forecast at -1.4% based on revenue and 6.4% based on shipments," says Masahiro Nakamura, research manager, Servers, IDC Japan.
