Digital Service Companies: An In-Depth Appraisal of a Rapidly Emerging MarketProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: IDC Published: August 2006 Product Code: R104-28068 Description
Despite the dot-com shakeout, colocation facilities (companies that provide floor space and supporting infrastructure for other firms' data servers ? also known as "Internet hotels" or "server farms") still constitute an important and sometimes problematic customer segment for energy providers. To better understand these customers, in 2001 we conducted in-depth interviews with 45 colocation service providers in the U.S., and with 11 industry experts. We explored the how's and why's of colocation facilities, and specifically focused on the nature of their relationships with energy service providers. Based on these interviews, we present a descriptive profile of colocation facilities, their process for site selection, their infrastructure and technology plans, and their preferred methods of doing business with vendors, including energy suppliers. We also offer insights on dealing with various types of colocation companies when arranging for power supply or power integrity services. In addition to the report, we also developed a qualitative data results engine that enables readers to search the survey responses either by question asked or by keyword or phrase in the response.
