Worldwide Technical Computing Systems 2006-2010 Forecast by Industry/Application Workload Segment

This IDC study shows the five-year HPC market forecast using IDC's new industry and application segmentation for the technical server market, which will be used for future forecasts. In this new segmentation, we track 15 separate industry/application workload areas. The segment sizes are also shown for the five IDC competitive segments.

According to Earl Joseph II, vice president of IDC's High-Performance Computing service, "We expect to see continued strong market growth in HPC technical servers, with considerable variability in growth by application segment and by price band. The largest segments are now as follows: Academic/university was $1,700 million in 2005 and is projected to reach $2,499 million by 2010, biosciences was $1,434 million in 2005 and is expected to be $2,219 million in 2010, government labs was $1,376 million in 2005 and is forecast to hit $1,672 million in 2010, computer-aided engineering was $1,109 million in 2005 and is forecast to be at $1,978 million for 2010, and national defense was $811 million in 2005 and is projected to grow to $1,651 million by 2010."
