This IDC study provides Western European WLAN equipment shipment and revenue data for the first half of 2006 and comparisons with the second half of 2005. Shipment and revenue shares are provided for network interface cards (NICs) and infrastructure by country and vendor for the first half of 2006. Shipment and revenue data for embedded solutions is not included in this study. Only IEEE 802.11 related products are covered in IDC's definition of WLAN.

A geographical split is included for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

"The residential and enterprise markets have different market leaders, and while Cisco has been dominating the enterprise segment for years, vendor positions in the consumer market tend to vary much more," said Evelien Wiggers, a senior research analyst at IDC's Telecommunications and Networking group. "In this segment, vendors usually have agreements with service providers and their success is often closely connected with the service providers' success in expanding the number of broadband connections."
