This IDC study, which is a translation of the IDC Japan report, analyzed the Japan server market in 1H06 (January to June) and forecast the market size through 2010. The Japan server market registered year-on-year (YoY) revenue growth rate of -1.3% and totaled 338.137 billion yen in 1H06. The market has been maintaining growth rates higher than -2% except in 1H05. Unit shipments increased 11.3% from the previous year to 308,341 units, thereby marking the sixth straight term of double-digit growth.

"The Japan server market continued to improve in 1H06. Although the growth rate fell to the negative zone from the positive growth marked in the previous term, the extent of decrease was small. The x86 server segment remained buoyant and drove the overall server market. However, we have revised the market forecast for 2006 and beyond downward. This is to reflect the downtrend in the average price of x86 servers and the marked decline of the reduced instruction set computer (RISC) server segment. We forecast that the Japan server market will contract with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -2.2% from 2005 to 2010," states Masahiro Nakamura, server group manager, IDC Japan.
