New IDC HPC Market Segment Definitions and How They Apply to the 2007 HPC Market

This IDC study provides preliminary results for 2007 in the high-performance technical computing server market using the new IDC competitive market segment definitions. The new IDC HPC market categories provide a better view of how the technical server market is evolving by highlighting the growth at the high end and low end of the market. According to Earl Joseph, IDC program vice president, "IDC preliminary full-year figures indicate that in 2007, the HPC technical server market grew to reach $11.6 billion. We estimate 2007 full-year revenue growth at about 15.5% over the 2006 end-of-year total."

2007 revenue figures suggest the fastest-growing segment of the HPC market over the past five years was departmental servers growing at a CAGR of 55%, next was divisional technical servers growing at a CAGR of 30%, then workgroup servers growing at a CAGR of 13%, and the new supercomputer segment shows a CAGR of 4% over the past five years.
