Flat Panel & CRT Display Materials: World MarketsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Freedonia Group Inc Published: February 2005 Product Code: R154-1488 Description This study analyzes the global market for materials used in the
production of electronic displays (both cathode ray tube and flat panel
displays). The market is evaluated by type and application, with additional
focus on the important countries involved in display manufacturing. Historical
demand data (1993, 1998, 2003) and forecasts to 2008 and 2013, valued in
millions of current (i.e., including inflation) US dollars, are presented by
material, display type and regional market. Also, individual countries are
presented by material and display type for four regions and twelve individual
countries.
As defined in this study, the term “display materials” refers to the chemicals, metals and processed polymers used to fabricate the various components of an electronic display panel. The five principle display material types discussed here are glass, coatings and films, chemicals, color materials and other materials, and cover nearly all aspects of display production. Backlight units and driver integrated circuit (IC) elements in liquid crystaldisplays (LCDs) are not included, nor are the electron gun and driving elements in CRT displays. Other IC and printed wiring board components for other display types are also not addressed. As the focus of this study is on the materials and not the components, some common display components -- including color filters in LCDs and shadow masks in CRTs -- are broken down into their constituent materials. Optical filters for plasma display panels (PDPs), however, are still treated as a single material component. Data on world flat panel and CRT display material demand is derived from differing sources and developed from statistical relationships. As a result, variations are commonplace in this type of international reporting, and, consequently, data presented in this study are historically consistent but may differ from other sources. Variances may occur because of definitional differences, among other reasons. In addition, major global manufacturers of electronic display materials and related products are identified and profiled, and the key competitive variables are discussed. The entire report is framed within the world display industry’s economic, technological and market environments, and therefore environmental variables affecting display material demand patterns (electronic products production, information technology trends, etc.) are emphasized. World display material market share data by company presented in the “Industry Structure” section are estimated based on consultation with multiple sources. In addition, tabular details may not always add to totals due to rounding. Macroeconomic and demographic indicators presented in this study were obtained from The Freedonia Group Consensus Forecasts dated June 2004. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) historical data are derived from the National Income and Products Accounts (NIPA) from the Organization for EconomicCo-Operation and Development (OECD) for its member countries, from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for its member countries, and from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its member countries that are not part of the OECD or EBRD. Sources of GDP estimates for other countries are based on information from the World Bank and a variety of US State Department sources. Conversion factors to 2000 US dollars are based on purchasing power parity GDP estimates, which are obtained from the OECD, the World Bank, the US Central Intelligence Agency and selected other sources. GDP forecasts are developed from a consensus of public agencies and private firms. Table of Contents INTRODUCTION I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY II. MARKET ENVIRONMENT III. PRODUCT & APPLICATION OVERVIEW V.
