Product Type: Market Research Report

Product Code: R154-643Description Despite growing at a generally
healthy rate (10-20 percent per
annum) over the past decade or so,
the world smart card market as of
the early 2000s had still not de-
veloped to the extent that most of
its proponents originally hoped.
The vast majority of demand
continued to take the form of
prepaid phone cards and subscriber
identity module (SIM) cards for
GSM (Global System for Mobile
Communications) mobile phones
in Western Europe, China and
elsewhere, markets that are
maturing rapidly and that were
adversely impacted by the telecom
sector downturn of 2001-2002.
The world market for smart card
products and services is projected
to recover from recent weakness
and grow 11 percent per annum to
US$8 billion in 2006. In particular,
smart cards are beginning to make
serious in-roads in financial-related
applications (i.e., credit/debit cards)
-- especially in Western Europe --
while smaller markets such as
transit system cards and govern-
ment benefits transfer cards are
emerging in Asia and certain other
regions.
Fueling smart card growth going
forward will be multiapplication
smart cards, cards for so-called
third generation mobile phone
services, further migration of
magnetic stripe-based financial
cards to smart cards, and generic
growth in the Asia/Pacific market.
This study analyzes emerging applications, technological innovation, standardization and global market growth for smart cards. Historical data to 2001 as well as forecasts through 2006 and 2011 are provided for 23 countries and six regions for smart card products demand by type and cards issued major application. It also assesses market share and profiles vendors of related products and services.
