INTRODUCTION

Webhosting is widely expected to be one of the most profitable and fast growing areas in the Internet arena. Many different types of service provider now offer some form of webhosting solution from local dedicated webhosters through to international carriers and many companies who do not offer this service intend to do so in the future.

The purpose of this survey is to evaluate the current state of the webhosting market in Europe from the viewpoint of the users. The survey focus is on current webhosting users. We have aimed to discover just how many companies actually operate websites at present and of these how many use a webhoster as well as how satisfied those companies are with the service they receive, what type of hoster they use and what additional services they require. The primary objectives of this research are to:

  • Compare the characteristics and requirements of websites across country and industry sectors
  • Identify and compare different types of companies according to their website characteristics
  • Identify the current and future usage of managed services across the country and industry sectors.
  • Determine the current and future functionality of websites.
  • Examine the relationship between the website and the webhoster.

Overall, over 700 companies have been interviewed for the purpose of this report in 7 European countries. Results have been split into country results and industry specific results to try and evaluate certain trends in different parts of the market. All interviews were conducted by a specialist market research group and results contained in this document should be read in conjunction with the data tables provided.
