Description
One of the key applications for inkjet printing over the past few years has been photo printing, particularly amongst home users. Home photo printing has gained popularity as a result of the falling cost of inkjet printers and improvements in the quality of hardware, inks, and papers, which have enabled users to print photos at home that are ever more professional in quality. Paper manufacturers and vendors realized the potential of printing snapshot-sized photos in the home and, although they did so belatedly, they launched snapshot-sized papers for photo printing to complement the A4 photo papers which had been the staple of the inkjet photo media market for many years. In addition to snapshot-sized inkjet papers, OEMs and some aftermarket players have also launched photo printing packs for end users that provide a certain number of snapshot-sized papers as well as an inkjet cartridge with enough ink to print photos on each sheet in the pack. This provides users with a clear idea of how much it costs to print each photo at home. This is important, given the growing competition from online and retail photo printers. As retail and online photo printing options have become more ubiquitous over the past few years, there has been a trend among consumers to print small quantities of photos consisting of 10 prints or less at home and to use external photo printing options when printing larger volumes.

Given the importance of photo printing as an application, it is useful to be able to determine how much output produced by inkjet printers consists of photo prints. For this reason, InfoTrends has made some changes in segmentation relevant to its inkjet printer forecast, and these changes are defined in this report. This document also presents estimates of the number of photo prints generated at home as well as some insights into home photo printing which were revealed in a recent multi-client study entitled Inkjet Photo Printing in the Home. This study was published toward the end of 2006 and examined the home photo printing habits of more than 1,500 respondents across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
