The operator took home192,000 net additions during the month, bringing its overall subscriber base to 17.403mn. By comparison,market leader NTT DoCoMo and No.2 KDDI reported 48,000 and 65,000 net additions respectively. Asfor Willcom, the operator made a loss of 21,000 subscribers, taking its customer total to 4.601mn andmarket share to 4.4%. However, with Softbank’s announcement that it would no longer look to reduce itstariffs further but would match its rivals’ tariffs, the operator is looking for new revenue drivers. Thisinvolves the announcement that it will look to provide a mobile music service, in direct competition withKDDI, but with a larger library of music; tapping into the growing demand for music downloads. TheRecording Industry Association of Japan believes that demand for mobile music is 12 times higher thanfor computers. Softbank Mobile has also formed an MVNO agreement with Disney Mobile. This latestMVNO to enter the market differs from existing MVNOs in that it will become the first to offer bothvoice and data communication services.Table of Contents
