Bulgaria Telecommunications Report Q1 2008Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Business Monitor International Published: December 2007 Product Code: R302-1829 Description The Bulgarian telecommunications sector is dominated by BTC - not only does the operator have avirtual monopoly of the fixed-line and fast-growing internet sector, but, through its mobile unit Vivatel, itnow also has a high profile interest in Bulgaria’s mobile market. Vivatel had a 9.7% market share as ofJune 2007, an increase of 9.4 percentage points in two years. Although Bulgaria’s mobile market maydominate in terms of revenue - wireless communications accounted for nearly 60% of all telecomsrevenues - this market has reached saturation with penetration at 117%. Indeed, BMI expects average yo-y growth in Bulgaria’s mobile market (in terms of subscriber numbers) to fall to just 2.5% between nowand 2011. When we say that BTC dominates Bulgaria’s telecoms market, what we increasingly mean is AIG. For,in August 2007, AIG increased its interest in the incumbent operator upwards from 65% to 90%. It hasalso suggested that it is willing to buy the remaining 10% of the company from its existing shareholders, and by doing so de-list the operator from the Bulgarian Stock Exchange. Why is the AIG GlobalInvestment Fund so eager to take ownership of an operator that controls a stagnant fixed-line market andhas a 10% share of a saturated mobile market? Table of Contents
