West and Central Africa Telecommunications Report Q1 2008Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Business Monitor International Published: January 2008 Product Code: R302-1856 Description There have been some interesting developments in the West and Central African mobile market since thepublication of our last report. In an encouraging sign for competition and growth, a number of licencesales and privatisations have taken place. In Senegal, for example, Sudan’s Sudatel recently won aninternational tender for the country’s third mobile licence, beating off competition from a number ofinternational players. The licence award is good news for the Senegalese market, which took a blow inQ207 from the imposition of mandatory SIM registration. An estimated 450,000 SIM cards weredisconnected after their owners failed to provide the requisite identification, causing an overall decline inthe market during the quarter. However, with registration procedures now in place and a third entrant onthe horizon, we expect that growth picked up once more in the second half of the year.Table of Contents
