Peru Telecommunications Report Q3 2009Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Business Monitor International Published: June 2009 Product Code: R302-6618 Description Peru remains one of the few telecoms markets in Latin America to still see growth in its fixed-lineservices. Although incumbent Telefónica del Perú (TdP) has seen the number of fixed lines it has inservice decline, alternative operators are more than making up for this. With around 30 companies in themarket and a low penetration rate there is considerable scope for further growth. BMI has revised itsforecasts and expects the 3mn subscriber mark to be reached in 2010, a year earlier than we had originallyanticipated. We forecast continued growth for fixed-line services, with the combination of expanded fixedinfrastructure and the use of fixed-wireless helping to drive growth. Fixed-wireless is particularly popularin Peru, seeing mobile operators Movistar and Claro both licensed to offer these services. We have expanded our coverage of the fixed-line market in Peru with greater details on the growth in themarket and the different technologies used. TdP has seen its market share decline as a result of the strongcompetition in the market, despite offering a range of services intended to retain subscribers. Alternativelines and call plans have been created to drive growth but the operator continues to report fallingsubscriber numbers across all areas of its fixed-line services. Additionally, we have used data from theregulator, Osiptel, to look at the long-distance (LD) market for both international (ILD) and domestic(DLD) usage. DLD sees much higher usage but TdP dominates this market to such an extent that there arefew operators to counter its position. Meanwhile, the broadband market also shows strong growth but is limited by the fact that PC ownershipin Peru remains quite low. BMI estimates that the market expanded by over 20% in 2008 with TdPdominating the market. However, there is still some scope for growth and several government projects tobring broadband services to more rural communities as well as the licensing of WiMAX spectrum shouldhelp to expand the reach of broadband networks and introduce new competitors to the market. In this quarterly update, mobile data have been left unchanged, although we have fully revised ourforecasts as end of year data are now available. Mobile operator data have also been updated fully. Ournext quarterly report will see all areas updated. Table of Contents
