Ireland Telecommunications Report 2009Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Business Monitor International Published: July 2009 Product Code: R302-7090 Description BMI’s 2009 report on the Irish telecommunications industry contains updated growth forecasts for thedevelopment of the country’s mobile, fixed-line, broadband, internet and 3G subscriber markets. We havemade several structural changes to our annual telecommunications report since 2008. The changes includea reorganisation of the various sections of the report, and the adoption of a new format for presenting theoperator profiles. The Mobile Data section also includes new coverage of the development of mobilevalue-added services in Ireland, as well as an overview of the sector’s recent contract wins.In 2008, the number of Irish cellularsubscribers increased by 5.1% to reach5.357mn; this is equivalent to a penetrationrate of 126.8%. Growth in 2008 wassignificantly lower than in 2007 when thenumber of mobile customers rose by 10.5%. To a large extent, the slowdown in growthcan be explained with reference to anincreasingly saturated market with limitedroom for further expansion. Vodafonecontinued to be the largest Irish mobileoperator at the end of 2008, followed by O2Ireland, Meteor Mobile (which is owned byIreland’s incumbent operator eircom) andHutchison 3 Ireland. With the market showing signs of nearing saturation point, BMI predicts slowing growth in each of thefive years of our 2009-2013 forecast. In 2009, we predict that the market will grow by 4.7%, with the rateof growth falling to 3.7% in 2010. Penetration is expected to continue rising over and above 100%. Thisreflects the presence of customers using multiple SIMs, and a certain number of inactive mobilesubscribers. Meanwhile, the latest figures to be published by ComReg suggest that there were almost 309,000 mobilebroadband subscribers in Ireland at the end of 2008, up from 128,000 at the end of 2007. The 2008 figureamounted to 5.8% of the total mobile subscriber base, up from 2.5% at the end of 2007. In March 2009,eircom’s mobile business Meteor became the latest Irish mobile operator to launch a 3G service. Ireland has dropped from 11th to 12th position in BMI’s Business Environment Rankings for WesternEurope. Ireland’s composite score has fallen as a result of the weaker rating it receives for its countryrisk. Meanwhile, in the other categories, Ireland’s score remains unchanged. Table of Contents
