Denmark Telecommunications Report 2009Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Business Monitor International Published: July 2009 Product Code: R302-7191 Description BMI’s 2009 report on the Danish telecommunications industry contains updated growth forecasts for thedevelopment of the country’s mobile, fixed-line, broadband, internet and 3G subscriber markets. We havemade several structural changes to our report since it was last published in 2008. The changes include areorganisation of the report and the adoption of a new format for presenting the operator profiles. At the end of 2008, Denmark’s four mobile network operators were estimated to serve a total of 6.766mnsubscribers. This is equivalent to a penetration rate of 124.1%. By the end of March 2009, the subscriberbase had risen to 6.855mn, giving the country a penetration rate of 125.6%. During 2008, the country’smobile subscriber base grew by 7.4%. Growth was lower than in 2007, when the sector expanded by10.3%. Meanwhile, the latest regulatory data suggests that there were over 928,000 3G subscribers inDenmark as of mid-2008. BMI estimates that by the end of 2008, there were around 1.207mn 3Gcustomers; this would represent an annual increase of over 81% from approximately 666,000 subscribersat the end of 2007. TDC Mobil, the mobile arm of Danish incumbent operator TDC, continues to dominate the Danishmobile phone market, with a market share of over 45% at the end of March 2009. TDC’s largest rival isSonofon, which is owned by the Norwegian carrier Telenor. Sonofon significantly boosted its marketshare in late 2007 following the purchase of Tele2 Denmark. Meanwhile, in May 2009, it was announcedthat Telenor had acquired another of Denmark’s smaller mobile service providers, BiBoB. Theacquisition provides Telenor’s subsidiary Sonofon with an additional 69,000 customers. Denmark’s two other main mobile network operators are TeliaSonera Denmark (a division of theSwedish/Finnish operator TeliaSonera) and Hi3G Access (3 Denmark), a partnership between HongKong-based Hutchison Whampoa and Swedish private equity group Investor. In recent quarters,TeliaSonera has experienced the slowest growth of all the Danish mobile operators. Meanwhile, ‘3Gonly’operator 3 Denmark continues to have the largest share of the Danish 3G subscriber market. BMI estimates that Denmark had 2.091mn broadband subscribers at the end of 2008. This gives thecountry a broadband penetration rate of 38.3%, up from 36% in 2007. Evidence suggests that growth isslowing as the market becomes saturated. Although xDSL-based services continue to dominate themarket, recent months have seen strong demand for FTTx-based connections. FTTx growth has beenboosted by the deployment of IPTV services. Denmark remains in 11th position in our business environment rankings table for Western Europe.Although the country has a strong regulatory independence score, the advanced stage of Denmark’stelecoms market liberalisation gives it one of the lowest telecoms market scores in the region.
