China’s consumer electronics devices market, defined to include computing devices, mobile handsets andvideo, audio and gaming products, is projected to grow at a 8.9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR)to US$164.5bn by 2013. Demand for computers and TV sets in rural areas and tier-three to six cities isforecast to be a key driver.

There were signs in H109 that market demand conditions had improved somewhat compared with the endof 2008. The government’s CNY4trn stimulus package seemed to have created a more positive consumerfor PC and sentiment, particularly with subsidies for electronics devices. However, rising unemploymentmay dampen vendor hopes of a sharp upturn.

Computers

Computers accounted for around 44% of China consumer electronics spending in 2008. BMI forecasts Chinese domestic market computer hardware sales (including notebooks and accessories) of US$52bn in 2009, up from almost US$50bn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for 2009-2013 will be around11.5%. The government’s rural computer subsidy program will act as a significant driver, along with falling prices.

AV

AV devices accounted for around 20% of China consumer electronics spending in 2008. China’s domestic video, audio and gaming device market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 13% between 2009 and 2013, up to a value of US$44.9bn. Video applications account for around 79% of the total market.Mobile Handsets
China mobile handset sales accounted for around 28% of China consumer electronics spending in 2008. Total China market handset sales are expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% to 244mn units in 2013, but the rate of growth will decline. The rural market will be the main source of subscriber growth, while vendors will also focus an expected 74mn 3G subscribers by 2013 and new areas such as Wi-Fi capable handsets.
