Closed-Circuit Television

Product Type: Market Research Report
Published by: Key Note Publications Ltd
Published: January 2008
Product Code: R310-1526
Description
Key Note estimates that the UK closed-circuit television (CCTV) market was worth £560m in 2006 at end-user prices, and is estimated to have reached £582m in 2007. These values include the installation, maintenance, design and supply of the equipment; however, the cost of monitoring is excluded from these estimates.

The market is driven by the need to protect people and property against acts of terrorism, and the need to combat crime and anti-social behaviour. CCTV also has important safety uses, such as ensuring passengers' safety at railway stations.

Between 2002 and 2006, construction output of new buildings in Great Britain showed growth in constant price terms. The important private commercial sector (which includes shops, warehouses, banks, private leisure facilities, etc.) showed a 20.8% increase in the value of construction of new buildings in constant price terms between 2003 and 2006 (based on provisional data for 2006). This has contributed greatly to the continued healthy demand for new CCTV systems.

The main trend in technology is the shift from analogue to digital equipment, and particularly to Internet protocol (IP) network equipment. As existing data networks can be used, this allows the use of remote-monitoring services and removes the need for expensive dedicated cabling. Due to the fact that new cameras can be added at any point on the system, IP video systems are very flexible. Live footage and recordings can be viewed from anywhere on the network.

Equipment prices have been falling for several years. At the same time, the capabilities of cameras, recorders, control equipment and systems have been advancing rapidly; therefore, the market has tended to trade up, rather than to fall in value.

Key Note forecasts continued growth for the market up to 2012, when its value is expected to reach £735m at end-user prices. The shift to IP networking will continue to be one of the main features of the market, while another area of growth will be the use of video analytics to provide intelligent CCTV — spotting potential problems before they occur by analysing people's behaviour.
