Highlights

The retail and commercial banking segment recorded M&A transactions worth $44.2 billion in May, an increase of 216.8% over the six-month average (Nov 2007Apr 2008). The segment accounted for 80% of the total M&A deal value in the financial services industry in May.

Deal activity in Latin America and Africa recorded a significant increase of 69.2% over the trailing six-month average and an increase of 226.7% on a month-on-month basis. In contrast, M&A activity in BRIC registered a decline of 16.3% over the six-month average. However on a month-on-month basis it recorded an increase of 25%.

The retail banking segment recorded six private placementss, up from four transactions recorded last month but well below the 13 transactions recorded in March 2008. Companies in the capital markets and brokerage segment recorded five transactions; significantly higher than the previous six-month average of about 2.3 deals.
