Report Highlights
Unlike other offshore regions like the Channel Islands, the Caribbean offshore deposits and funds markets continued to grow in 2002 despite difficult market conditions. Though growth in 2002 was minimal (deposits by 3.4% and funds by 1.4%) it indicates that the Caribbean’s offshore customer base, which is dominated by the US, remains resilient.
Despite its self-governing British colonial status, UK investors are not the largest investor group in Bermuda. In fact, their deposit base on the island is tiny compared to US and Asia-Pacific investors, mainly because of strong competition from the Channel Islands for UK investors’ money
The Cayman Islands will see the strongest growth in deposits among the five centers under study. Its source countries’ deposits are set to grow by 5% or more on average and several anti-money laundering legislative initiatives were enacted in the center, resulting in continuing strong growth in deposits there.
