Public Access Wireless LAN Travel Patterns in the USAProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Mind Commerce Publishing Published: January 2004 Product Code: R331-0008 Description Since the initial concept of WLAN hotspots went mass-market a few years ago, little hard data has been produced that can help guide development organizations and departments in the proper mapping of hotspot locations. This study will serve both as an empirical illustration and as a guide that will help the user leverage capabilities of their organization.
Today in the United States, there are over 5000 hotspots. Airport lounges, airport terminal gates, and hotels are thought to be the main concentration point of users of the WLAN. Hotspot saturation is no where near the level it needs to be for universal acceptance. In the initial days of the hotspot phenomenon, the vision was that hordes of people would come to the hotspots, toting their laptops, and work from that location. The future of the hotspot will belong to different, more portable devices that can make use of the high-speed access capabilities that WLAN offers. The business traveler represents a distinct category that needs to be understood better. Who belongs to this category? How often do they travel? Where? Are there enough business travelers, and more accurately business travelers who will use hotspots to justify the build-out costs? Though the build-out cost is relatively minor when compared to other access methods, the sheer number of necessary deployments brings an element of scale to the equation. These are all aspects that will be important when gauging investment opportunities in the WLAN hotspot. The first portion of this research deals with the business travelers habits. The second part of this study evaluates the public hotspots that are most prevalent today, the cafes, bookstores and other public locations and breaks them down in terms of who the users are, how frequently they use the locations and the patterns of new customers coming to use the hotspot.
