iSCSI and SAN

Product Type: Market Research Report
Published by: Peripheral Concepts, Inc.
Published: February 2007
Product Code: R3428-5
Description
This study discusses the results of an extensive end user survey that was completed in November 2006. It examines the acceptance of the iSCSI and analyzes why users chose iSCSI-based SAN as opposed to Fibre Channel, and in what applications. The survey and study also cover IT managers selection criteria and requirements, as well as networked storage consolidation trends.

The survey reveals that 37% of the 5,000 surveyed sites have implemented an iSCSI SAN, compared to less than 20% a year ago. This important market penetration involves all business tiers, challenging the early belief that iSCSI would more specifically attract small and medium sites. x percent plan to purchase an iSCSI capability or extend its utilization in 2007.

Applications stored on iSCSI SANs include xxx. Also, iSCSI-SANs that used to be particularly appropriate for Windows server environments and departmental applications are now in significant utilization in UNIX and Linux environments. The study compares applications using iSCSI, FC and NAS, highlighting the fact that less data goes on iSCSI-SAN than FC-SAN or NAS, and that NAS is predominant for xxx applications.

Segmenting by industry, the survey reveals that Oil and Gas and Telecommunications are ahead of the game with about x% implementations, while xxx show minimal implementation.

Concerns on security and performance that initially hindered iSCSI SAN implementations, no longer constitute an obstacle. They are actually at the top of the criteria that influenced the choice of an iSCSI solution and among the most appreciated features. Much of the performance problem is solved by increased network speed - 100-Mb/sec IP networks gave way to 1 Gb/sec in 2005 and 2006, and 10-Gb networks will prevail in 2007 and 2008.

Consolidating storage in a single pool is not a new trend, but what is relatively recent is the consolidation of SAN and NAS, sometimes referred to as Unified storage . x % of the surveyed population have consolidated part of their storage today against 20% found in our last year’s survey. The survey reveals that xxx are at the top of the factors or reasons for choosing to consolidate.

It is essential that an iSCSI offerings provide services or at least integrate with the available hardware and software. xxx are at the top of the requested services
