Increased Choice Spurs High Levels of Activity in European-Asia ConnectivityProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Yankee Group Published: September 2006 Product Code: R388-2264 Description In March 2006, Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe (DANTE) launched a project to deploy the first high-bandwidth connection (we define high bandwidth as a Gigabit or more) linking the Europe and Asian research communities. The project, called Oriental Research Infrastructure to European Networks (ORIENT), uses a terrestrial network, which traverses Russia. This is the first high-bandwidth connection using the Trans-Russia route. It follows hot on the heels of the successful development of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN2) project also managed by DANTE. TEIN2 also utilizes the Trans-Russia route. The Trans-Russia route is a recent addition to Europe-Asia connectivity; it became available in early 2005. This illustrates that the academic communities’ desire to link geographically disparate groups allowing greater collaboration and dissemination of information, placing them as leading proponent of new connectivity options.Table of Contents
