Asia-Pacific Presents Obstacles and Opportunities for MVNOs

Product Type: Market Research Report
Published by: Yankee Group
Published: October 2006
Product Code: R388-2292
Description
Recent announcements from regulators in Korea and Japan have renewed the interest in mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in Asia-Pacific. Penetration of MVNOs is extremely low in the region, with total MVNO subscribers expected to reach only around 2.1 million by the end of 2006, less than 1% of total mobile subscribers. Compared with North America and Europe, which combined will reach 42.4 million subscribers in the same time frame, the prognosis for Asia does not look promising.

However, there are pockets where the MVNO model is working and markets in northern Asia will open up—first in Japan, then in Korea during the next few years. Potential MVNOs must tread carefully and realize that addressable market size will be small and price competitiveness will always be a key factor for consumer adoption.

In this Yankee Group Report, we do the following:
  • Reveal where MVNOs are finding success in Asia-Pacific
  • Assess the various business models that are working in the region
  • Provide insight into which market segments in which countries will provide the greatest opportunity for growth
  • Present our view of the evolution of MVNOs in the region from the current discount voice models
