NGMN Initiative Launched with Lofty GoalsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Yankee Group Published: November 2006 Product Code: R388-2308 Description MNOs Aim to Evolve Beyond 3G NetworksOn September 14, 2006, a number of leading mobile network operators (MNOs) announced a new initiative that aims to produce a more effective evolution beyond today’s 3G networks. The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) initiative is backed by China Mobile, KPN, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile and Vodafone. These companies have come together to agree on a common vision for how future mobile networks should be designed and implemented. Their mission also encompasses some related issues including handset certification and digital rights management (DRM). A Clear, Shared Vision NGMN is not focused on the short term—it’s looking beyond 2010. It has developed a view, shared among its members, of what mobile operators’ networks should look like from 2010 to 2020. NGMN is concerned with the evolution beyond HSPA and EV-DO. HSPA, which includes HSDPA and HSUPA, represents the evolution of W-CDMA technology. EV-DO is the equivalent for CDMA networks. The NGMN group’s vision is focused on mobile broadband services. The organization believes true mobile broadband can be developed and deployed most effectively if the underlying network architecture is evolved on the basis of a single integrated network. But NGMN must take account of legacy networks and operators’ scheduled investments in HSPA and EV-DO. It claims to offer a road map that will enable seamless migration from those networks. Its first objective is the commercial launch of a new experience in mobile broadband communications. NGMN hopes to ensure continued investment, innovation and adoption of both new and existing mobile services. Its goals are ambitious. The wireless industry’s track record in uniting around common global technology standards is less than perfect. This legacy adds to the skepticism surrounding the launch of the NGMN initiative. Accepted Set of Technology Requirements The development of a set of technology guidelines and requirements that operators can use to create new mobile broadband services are at the heart of NGMN’s role. Ultimately, the requirements will form the basis of the replacement of existing 3G networks. NGMN stresses the need for competitive delivery of future services. This requirement will guide its technology recommendations. It also highlights the need for interoperability between future networks and existing and new technologies. The group will recommend an architecture based on an optimized packet-switched network. In theory this should provide for a smooth migration of existing networks toward this new IP environment, which promises lower costs and superior performance. From a customer perspective, NGMN is hoping to achieve a personalized broadband access experience. For MNOs, it should facilitate consolidation of the diverse networks they currently operate.
