Description
Service Providers Invest in Service Delivery Platforms to Expand Service Offerings

In the last couple of years, service providers have been testing the waters, introducing new services that rely in part on an enhanced service delivery platform architecture. Service providers are investing in professional services and various SDP technologies including location servers, policy management, real-time charging, digital rights management and content delivery platforms to offer an array of new services.

Enterprise applications combined with location and presence information, parent/child locator/chaperone services, music and video services are among the new non-IMS-based service offerings service providers have introduced. Disney Mobile’s child chaperone offering relies on Telcordia Technologies policy management solution, which enables parents to, among other things, designate who their child may speak to and when their child may take calls.

Through its business mobility framework, Sprint has targeted the enterprise market, combing mostly location but also presence information with field service applications. Sprint has implemented a Parlay X gateway that uses technology from Aepona and IBM to allow third-party developers to access the Sprint network. Verizon Wireless and KDDI rely on QUALCOMM’s Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) offering to help manage certain functions of their music and video services. O2 leverages BEA’s WebLogic products for its WAP portal. Accenture has helped Turcell create an SDP to manage its WAP and music portals as well as other services. A Japanese service provider is utilizing one vendor’s DRM solution to enable sales of off-portal music, which drives traffic on its network and increases the percentage of off portal content transaction it can claim. And the list goes on.
