Hollywood Embraces DVD Burning for Movie DownloadsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Yankee Group Published: February 2007 Product Code: R388-2348 Description For fear of piracy, Hollywood studios have been reticent to allow consumers to burn download-to-own (DTO) movies to DVD, blocking consumers from using their DVD players to watch downloaded movies on their TV. As a result, the DTO market for online video stores such as Movielink, CinemaNow, Google and Amazon has been limited. Seeking to overcome this hurdle is Sonic Solutions with its Qflix solution. At the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Sonic Solutions unveiled—with the Hollywood studios approval—Qflix, a system for adding a digital lock to DVDs burned in a PC DVD drive or at a retail kiosk using the content scrambling system (CSS). CSS is the digital rights standard used to protect prerecorded DVDs and has broad support among Hollywood studios, TV networks and other content creators. Based upon the Yankee Group 2006 US Digital Home Entertainment Survey, 9% of broadband subscribers are very interested in purchasing and downloading movies to their PC, with an additional 17% somewhat interested. However, if the movies could be watched on a TV, respondents said they would be 33% more likely to download movies from an online video store. Table of Contents
