Description

100 Mbps Soon Won’t Be Enough for Some Markets

The broadband industry has used 100 Mbps per household as the gold standard for the past several years. Offering up such a wide pipe into each home would provide enough capacity to consumers for multiple high-definition video streams in a multicast environment with plenty left over for high-speed internet access. However, Yankee Group believes 100 Mbps is just a stop on the path to providing 1 Gbps to every household, as consumers’ and content owners’ appetites for bandwidth consumption show no signs of slowing down. Although such capacity is not likely to be widely demanded in the next decade, early indications show that offering 100 Mbps will not be enough in some of the most competitive global markets.
