3G wireless broadband for laptopsProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: Ovum Plc Published: February 2007 Product Code: R464-139 Description HSDPA and EVDO networks have now been widely deployed globally. As with initial 3G launches these networks are first being used to deliver wireless broadband via data cards- initially targeted at the enterprise. Yet unlike previous technologies, the technologies are providing a user experience which lives up to the marketing. These services are mobilising workers with speedy connection to a VPN, email, applications and the Internet. The two largest drivers for take-up are simple and affordable pricing and ADSL-like speeds. At this stage take-up is strongest in white- collar and SME segments, but we are sceptical about broader take-up in the grey- or blue-collar segment unless current prices fall. In this report, Ovum looks at operator strategies and market trends in the delivery of 3G wireless broadband to laptops.Table of Contents Key messagesRecommendations for players Drivers and barriers Data card vendors Data card products Embedded laptops Operator strategies HSDPA and EVDO network launches have driven uptake Service pricing Channels Development Table of figures Figure 1 Drivers and barriers for data cards Figure 2 Embedded laptops: competitive landscape Figure 3 Advantages and disadvantages of embedded modules or data cards Figure 4 Orange UK pricing |
