Product Code: R97-1082Description Since the slowdown in the telecom industry, router vendors have toyed with the idea of entering other markets besides the service provider market, such as cable, enterprise, and wireless. As networks migrate to IP/MPLS and Ethernet technologies, new opportunities arise for service provider router vendors. Cisco, Juniper and Riverstone have, or are developing products for these markets, while various startups struggle to get product to market in the difficult telecom industry.
In 1H 02, total router unit shipments increased 68% from 1H 01. Service provider edge routers increased by 81% from 1H 01 to 1H 02, but with only 24,000 units in 1H 02, the edge router segment barely made a dent in the total router unit shipments. Core routers have taken the biggest hit during the telecom capex crunch, and in 1H 02, core router unit shipments have declined 32% from 1H 01.
