Java entered the commercial market as a new and improved version of C++, an object-oriented third-generation (3GL) programming language. It has since come to encompass a much broader technical scope thanks largely to the evangelical efforts of Sun Microsystem's CEO Scott McNealy. A whole new set of vocabulary and products are now associated with Java.

The flood of Java-related products is causing confusion as to exactly what Java is and what role it will play in the corporate environment. While half of the users surveyed felt that they understood Java, an equal half felt that they did not understand Java's capabilities and how it would be implemented.

One objective of this panel study was to determine just how far along end users are in the implementation of Java. The sheer volume of press coverage devoted to Java would lead anyone to believe that Java is taking over the world of computing. However, as with all kids on the block, the press coverage is disproportionate to actual end-user plans. According to this survey, 1997 appears to be the early test phase for Java. Of the end users surveyed, 16% are currently evaluating Java and 13% have not even begun to evaluate. Only 6% of the users surveyed are using Java widely, while 14% are using Java on a limited scale. In 1998, the authors of this report anticipate a continuation of this trend to limit Java implementation until the products are more mature. As with the early days of client/server, IT managers are proceeding with caution. Java represents a new computing model, and it will take time for end users to fully evaluate and understand how and where Java best meets their needs and the best way to incorporate it into their environment.
