Q3 2002 Wireless LAN Market AnalysisProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: In-Stat Published: November 2002 Product Code: R97-1152 Description In 3Q02, the WLAN market took four major turns: (1) 2.4/5GHz dual-band capable Access Points and NICs came into the spotlight, (2) the growth of the 802.11a-only market segment waned somewhat, (3) business clients grew quite significantly, driven by the surge of notebook PCs with embedded Wi-Fi, and (4) the home market exploded, with old and new vendors pushing aggressively into retail.
The 802.11b market continued to drive overall WLAN unit growth. In 3Q02, worldwide 802.11b hardware shipments grew 24%, totaling 4.8 million unit shipments for the quarter. This 24% unit growth rate makes 3Q02 the healthiest WLAN quarter in 2002 so far. Total 802.11b end-use revenues, however, showed the darker side of the WLAN market, that of rapid hardware commoditization, with little margin incentive for hardware vendors. End-use revenues increased only 8%, one-third that of shipment growth, accounting for $532 million for the quarter. Table of Contents | |||
