Voice over WLAN: Will the Market Finally Answer?Product Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: In-Stat Published: March 2003 Product Code: R97-1197 Description With less than 30 thousand Voice over 802.11b handsets shipping out in 2002, the Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN) market is still an extremely small, immature market, albeit one with a significantly growing amount of interest and potential. On the one hand, the old-school hard handset market is driving market growth, with handset interest coming from enterprise vertical markets that already have WLAN installed. Top verticals remain healthcare, education and retail, namely those same verticals which have been driving large-scale enterprise WLAN roll-outs over the last few years. SpectraLink and Symbol dominate this handset market.
On the other hand, however, is the "new" VoWLAN market. First, softphones that enable PDAs and laptops to function as telephones bring a new dimension to the WLAN market, with companies such as TeleSym, Avaya and Vedic Technologies making these applications a reality in the business environment. Secondly, the vision of a combination Wi-Fi, and 2.5 or 3G, mobile phone is the ultimate vision for the business environment, where this mobile phone seamlessly switches between cellular and 802.11, even in the middle of a call. Motorola, Proxim and Avaya announced a partnership in January 2003 to develop the handsets and necessary infrastructure required to make this vision a reality. Table of Contents | Table of Contents
