Product Code: R97-1208Description Over 6.2 million Wi-Fi hardware units shipped in 4Q02. For 2002 overall, 18.7 million Wi-Fi units shipped. In 4Q02, the 802.11b market continued to drive overall WLAN unit growth. Six million 802.11b units shipped in 4Q02, accounting for a 24% growth rate in hardware unit shipments over the quarter. For year-end 2002, 18.1 million 802.11b units shipped out overall, a 90% growth over 2001. Total 802.11b end-use revenues, however, showed the darker side of the WLAN market, that of rapid hardware commoditization, with little margin incentive for hardware vendors. End-use revenues increased only 4% over the quarter, accounting for $555 million.
802.11a-only shipments experienced a slightly negative growth rate over the quarter, with dual-band 2.4/5GHz-capable APs, as well as dual-band NICs, taking growth away from the 802.11a-only market. Although only a trivial amount of draft standard 802.11g products shipped out in 4Q02, In-Stat/MDR expects that 802.11g shipments will increasingly cut into the growth of 802.11b shipments going forward.
Cisco, Symbol and 3Com dominated the business 802.11b infrastructure market in terms of revenues, while SMB specialist Linksys came in as the leader in pure AP shipments. PC vendors HP, IBM and Toshiba closely followed Linksys in 802.11b client shipments to businesses, driving up the embedded portion of clients. Linksys, Buffalo, D-Link and Netgear continued to dominate the home, as well as the low-end business market.Table of Contents |
