Tablet PCs & Smart Displays: Pushing the PC EnvelopeProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: In-Stat Published: April 2003 Product Code: R97-1222 Description PC manufacturers and software developers are looking for ways to push out beyond slow-growing traditional PC markets. This report covers the two most significant efforts in this area: Tablet PCs and Smart Displays.
Tablet PCs accept input via an active pen onto a digitizing screen that allows the user to write and store handwritten notes. They are targeted primarily at horizontal business and enterprise segments, as well as vertical markets. Microsoft is fully supporting the effort with a special edition of Windows XP. The Tablet PC was officially launched at Comdex in November, 2002. Smart Displays are an effort led by Microsoft to expand the desktop PC experience throughout the home. Available in either 10" or 15" LCD configurations, the devices are targeted at consumers. They were officially unveiled in January, 2003 at the Consumer Electronics Show. This report contains five-year unit shipment and average selling price forecasts for both Tablet PCs and Smart Displays. It also contains a five-year forecast for the regional breakdown of Tablet PC shipments. Also included are profiles of some of the markets' leading players, including Microsoft, Intel, National Semiconductor, Hewlett-Packard, ViewSonic, Toshiba and Fujitsu.
