Description
A calm has recently returned to international financial markets following eighteen months of sharp turbulence. If this calm persists throughout 1999, Cahners In-Stat Group forecasts the worldwide real GDP to grow at 2.5% in 1999 and reach 3.0% by the year 2000. The obvious caveat is that downside risks continue to abound and favorable policy actions will be necessary to ensure this optimistic outlook. The economic stability that characterized the global economy in the first half of 1998 was later shattered by the financial collapse of Russia, the devaluation in Brazil and the continued financial deterioration in Japan. The United States has been forced to walk an economic tightrope to avoid all of the risks and remains poised to break the record of 106 for the most consecutive months of positive growth. (95 and counting) However, the random crisis of the past year has changed worldwide perceptions about the new balance of factors that will affect future economic prospects. There are clearly two kinds of economies in the world today: developed and emerging. The richer, stable emerged economies (U.S., Japan, Germany) are proving immune to the wave of financial disease that has wiped out a large number of the developing markets during the 1990s. Not to say that all developed nations are immune to financial catastrophe (Japan), but absent real external economic shocks, governments now must bring problems on themselves. Therefore, absorbing economic shocks must require prudent government actions and sound economic frameworks. This report will give an economic analysis of the four WSTS regions as well as those nations that could have a dramatic impact on the global economy.
