3Q 2005 WLAN Market Share ReportProduct Type: Market Research ReportPublished by: In-Stat Published: November 2005 Product Code: R97-2262 Description In 3Q05, worldwide Wi-Fi revenue increased by 13.9% year-over-year, up from $679.9 million in 3Q04. Wi-Fi unit shipments showed a 16.2% gain from the previous quarter, while ASPs dropped 6%.More than half of the access product shipments for the SOHO/consumer segment were routers with wireless functionality. Shipments of wireless gateway products, which combine routing with an embedded modem, also increased. Wireless gateways enable back-end managed home networks, and increased revenue opportunities for service providers. Linksys had the highest market share in Wi-Fi unit shipments and Wi-Fi revenue this quarter. Belkin also saw gains in market share this quarter after expanding their sales channel to include mass-market retailers. Belkin also credits the sales boost to moving out of the rebate game to a consistent low-price strategy. It is expected that other vendors may follow suit, allowing consumers to receive lower prices without having to mail in rebate forms.
