3Q 2000 LAN Packet Switch Market Analysis

The LAN packet Layer 2 (L2), Layer 3 (L3) and Layer 4 through 7 (L4-7) switch market grew 14% in the third quarter of 2000 (3Q 00) as ports shipped reached 32.24 million, up from the 28.24 million ports shipped in the second quarter of 2000 (2Q 00). Revenues grew at 13% to $4.42 billion in 3Q 00.

Of the 32.24 million ports shipped in 3Q 00, 89% of these ports shipped were Fast Ethernet. This is an increase of 4 percentage points from 2Q 00, and by the second quarter of 2001 (2Q 01), Cahners In-Stat Group expects that Fast Ethernet will comprise 92% of total ports shipped. Of the 28.54 million Fast Ethernet ports shipped, 26.42 million of these, or 93%, were L2, with the remainder, 1.96 million, being L3 ports. For the third consecutive quarter, Gigabit Ethernet accounted for 3% of total ports shipped due to an impressive 3Q 00 performance.
