Description
Not So Fast! Q1 2002 Handset Report Not so fast! That's the message from handset manufacturers worldwide for the first quarter of 2002. They still have high hopes for a recovery in shipments this year after a dismal 2001. But Q1 proves to be much of the same -- a downer. For Q1, the global market comes in at 89.8 million units. That's a DECREASE of 13.2 million units, or a 12.8% sequential drop.

Nonetheless, there are signs of a small upturn later this year. In-Stat/MDR expects nominal growth in the 2% range over total shipments (403 million) last year. We forecast 411 million units shipped for the current calendar year.

What will help drive this growth? The following five factors:

  • New handsets from leading vendors like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson
  • Greater availability of handsets with color displays
  • Stronger marketing by operators of GSM/GPRS handsets
  • More handsets capable of multi-band roaming
  • More and better content for advanced handsets

If your company is trying to decipher the wireless handset market this year, you need this report. In it you'll find out how revenues are expected to grow, how the regional segmentation breaks down, plus shipments by air link. Also, find out our forecast for color displays on handsets and the uptake in Internet-capable mobiles. This report will help you.
