LAN packet switches grew 69 percent in 1999 to 80.6 million ports; in end-use sales, the market grew 19 percent to $12.2 billion. LAN switches continued to be a huge market for networking vendors in 1999, with Gigabit Ethernet and Layer 3 getting most of the publicity. More than 30 vendors play in the switching market, offering the end-user a vast array of switch products, from low-end unmanaged fixed-configured desktop switches, to very high-end, modular backbone switches.

Shared media hub shipments fell 3 percent in 1999 to 68.8 million ports shipped, while sales revenue declined by 46 percent to $1.5 billion. The continued transition to switching technology pushed hub ASPs down by 46 percent in 1999, indicative of a highly commoditized market that competes almost solely on price.
